| Garland Hartman | ||
| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and | ||
| commemorates the life of Garland Hartman, who died February 8, | ||
| 2017, at the age of 100; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Garland Hartman was born on May 25, 1916, in | ||
| Battle Ground, Indiana, to Benjamin and Estella Hartman; he grew | ||
| up in the farming country of northwest Indiana, where he was a | ||
| standout high school baseball player, and he went on to earn a | ||
| degree from Purdue University; and | ||
| WHEREAS, He had begun a career as a pharmacist, but the | ||
| imminent onset of World War II inspired him to join the United | ||
| States Army; he served in the Pacific theater and in postwar | ||
| Germany, where he worked for the United Nations Relief and | ||
| Rehabilitation Administration; he went on to serve in the Korean | ||
| War and in other postings until his retirement in 1967 with the | ||
| rank of captain; and | ||
| WHEREAS, While serving in Germany, he met and married the | ||
| late Erika Becker, and the couple enjoyed many decades of | ||
| marriage together; they were blessed with two children who were a | ||
| source of much pride and comfort for him; and | ||
| WHEREAS, After his military service, he returned to civilian | ||
| life as a hospital pharmacist; the family lived in Vermont for | ||
| nearly 20 years before returning to settle in Texas; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A man of loyalty, courage, and compassion, he gave | ||
| unselfishly to others, and he was noted for his love of animals, | ||
| language and literature, and sports; he faced adversity with | ||
| strength and stoicism, and his enthusiasm for living each day to | ||
| the fullest will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to | ||
| share in his life; and | ||
| WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and | ||
| grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured | ||
| forever by his family and friends; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th | ||
| Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | ||
| family of Garland Hartman; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
| Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
| memory of Garland Hartman. | ||
