SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 345
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize Dr. Steven H. Tallant, who is retiring on January 31,
2019, as president of Texas A&M University--Kingsville after
more than a decade of outstanding service; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Tallant became the university's 19th
president in 2008 after having served as provost and vice
chancellor for academic affairs at the University of
Wisconsin--Eau Claire; upon assuming the role of president, he
focused on marketing the campus and increasing enrollment and on
making the university one of the state's leading institutions of
higher education; and
WHEREAS, Under his leadership, the university experienced
a six-year period when enrollment increased by 54 percent; in
addition, a number of new undergraduate and graduate programs
have been created, and new construction and renovation projects
have totaled more than $200 million; he played a vital role in the
development of a campus master plan that will guide the school's
growth over the next 50 years, and he has been the driving force
behind the new Music Education Complex; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Tallant has worked closely with other area
educational entities, and he played a major role in establishing
the Premont Alliance to save the Premont Independent School
District from closure; he has been active in a wide range of
professional and community organizations, and he has received
numerous honors for his work; and
WHEREAS, An outstanding educator and administrator,
Dr. Tallant has had a profound impact on the growth and success
of Texas A&M University--Kingsville, and his leadership as its
president will be greatly missed; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Steven H. Tallant on his
exceptional service as president of Texas A&M University--Kingsville
and extend to him best wishes for continued success in all his
endeavors; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
