SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 283
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  recognize Mary Lynn Morris, who is retiring from her position as
  city marshal of Dallas after 27 years of loyal service in the
  field of law enforcement; and
         WHEREAS, Highly respected by her colleagues, Mary Morris
  is well known for her dedication to her profession and for her
  superior courage and leadership; and
         WHEREAS, Mary entered the field of law enforcement when she
  attended the Regional Police Academy in 1986; she went on to
  become the first African American female to be hired in the
  Dallas Marshal's Office; she served as deputy marshal, became a
  sergeant in 1991, and was promoted to chief deputy marshal in
  1999; and
         WHEREAS, In 2004, she was named assistant director for the
  Department of Code Compliance, and she became city marshal of
  Dallas in February of 2008; and
         WHEREAS, A trailblazer, Mary was the first female and first
  African American city marshal in Dallas history; she has been
  noted for her skill and expertise in managing the multiple
  responsibilities of her office, and she is admired by citizens
  throughout the community for her high standards and
  professionalism; and
         WHEREAS, During her tenure in law enforcement, Mary has
  earned a reputation for being both firm and fair; Mary will be
  greatly missed by the law enforcement community and by all who
  work in the Dallas Marshal's Office; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
  Legislature, hereby commend Mary Lynn Morris on her exceptional
  career in law enforcement and on her many contributions to the
  citizens of Dallas as the city marshal and extend to her best
  wishes for the retirement years ahead; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
