| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to | ||
| join the citizens of Maverick County in celebrating Maverick | ||
| County Day at the State Capitol; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Maverick County was formed in 1856 from a part of | ||
| Kinney County and was named for cattleman and state legislator | ||
| Samuel A. Maverick; the city of Eagle Pass, the county seat, was | ||
| incorporated in 1910; the historic Maverick County Courthouse | ||
| was completed in 1885 and has been declared a Texas Historic | ||
| Landmark; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Over the years, the citizens of Maverick County | ||
| and Eagle Pass have demonstrated a commitment to working together | ||
| to create jobs, motivate youth, and continuously improve the | ||
| quality of life in the area; their work has included such | ||
| initiatives as the construction of a sports and arts complex and | ||
| a civic and international trade center; Eagle Pass was recently | ||
| designated a Texas Main Street City; and | ||
| WHEREAS, County and civic leaders have been dedicated to | ||
| ensuring the effective collaboration of the public and private | ||
| sectors and to overseeing an economic development plan that | ||
| attracts and retains quality businesses, industries, and trade; | ||
| in addition, the Kickapoo Traditional Tribe of Texas and its | ||
| casino have had a positive effect on the county's jobs, revenue, | ||
| and tourism; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Places of interest in Maverick County include the | ||
| Fort Duncan Museum in Eagle Pass and the Eagle Pass Auxiliary Air | ||
| Field in Quemado; the area offers hunting and fishing | ||
| opportunities and a variety of recreational activities to | ||
| residents and visitors alike; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Maverick County is home to hospitals and clinics | ||
| that enhance the quality of health care for its citizens, and the | ||
| county intends to expand on health care services in the near | ||
| future; it is also home to Southwest Texas Junior College and Sul | ||
| Ross State University-Rio Grande College, and the community is | ||
| working toward the goal of having a four-year college in the | ||
| county; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Maverick County Day is an opportunity for the | ||
| county's residents to celebrate the region's rich history, its | ||
| many assets, and its plans for the future; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd | ||
| Legislature, hereby recognize Maverick County Day at the State | ||
| Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation best wishes for a | ||
| productive and memorable occasion; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in | ||
| honor of the citizens of Maverick County. | ||
