| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to | ||
| recognize February 22 and 23, 2017, as Palestine Days at the | ||
| State Capitol; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The seat of Anderson County, Palestine was | ||
| founded in March of 1846, a few months after Texas was admitted to | ||
| the United States in December of 1845; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Palestine was largely an agrarian community until | ||
| 1872, when the International and Great Northern Railroad was | ||
| founded and established its headquarters in the city; Palestine | ||
| then grew rapidly throughout the 19th century and early 20th | ||
| century; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A mecca of historic resources, Palestine has over | ||
| 1,800 historic houses and buildings, most of which are located in | ||
| the four National Register Historic Districts and three local | ||
| Palestine Historic Districts; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Noted for its exceptional success in preserving | ||
| its historical integrity, Palestine is a Texas Main Street City, | ||
| a National Main Street City, and a Preserve America City; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The Texas Historical Commission, the City of | ||
| Palestine, the Palestine Economic Development Corporation, the | ||
| Palestine Chamber of Commerce, and the citizens, businesses, and | ||
| civic organizations of Palestine deserve recognition for | ||
| preserving the city's rich past and for retaining the charm the | ||
| city offers residents and visitors today; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th | ||
| Legislature, hereby express appreciation to the citizens of | ||
| Palestine for their contributions to our state and extend best | ||
| wishes for the future to all who are celebrating Palestine Days | ||
| at the State Capitol; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in | ||
| honor of the City of Palestine. | ||
