| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to | ||
| recognize the West Gulf Maritime Association for its efforts in | ||
| unifying maritime industry concerns in the West Gulf area; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The West Gulf Maritime Association is a nonprofit | ||
| organization organized in early 1968; it succeeded and combined | ||
| several maritime associations in Houston, Galveston, and | ||
| Brownsville; its members include steamship owners, operators, | ||
| and agents and stevedoring and terminal companies located in all | ||
| Texas ports and the Port of Lake Charles, Louisiana; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The association appoints committees to negotiate | ||
| and administer various labor agreements with the International | ||
| Longshoremen's Association in West Gulf ports; it also provides | ||
| payroll support services and training to ensure a safe and | ||
| efficient working environment; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The West Gulf Maritime Association works with | ||
| various bureaucracies throughout the Gulf Coast and serves as an | ||
| important conduit for ongoing dialog with the maritime industry; | ||
| its committees currently address industry education, technology | ||
| changes, environmental issues, government affairs, safety and | ||
| security issues, and a full range of maritime operations; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The organization has periodic meetings for its | ||
| members in a variety of port cities, where association staff | ||
| keeps members updated about the news and developments that affect | ||
| their businesses in a relaxed atmosphere that provides members an | ||
| opportunity to network and hear about the latest activities in | ||
| the maritime industry; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Whether it is negotiating contractual agreements | ||
| with the International Longshoremen's Association or advocating | ||
| the trade's interest to members of Congress, the West Gulf | ||
| Maritime Association is an active advocate and liaison for the | ||
| maritime industry; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd | ||
| Legislature, hereby commend the members of the West Gulf Maritime | ||
| Association for their valuable services and extend to them best | ||
| wishes for continued success; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| the association as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. | ||
