| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the | ||
| citizens of Brownsville in mourning the loss of Bertha Champion | ||
| Garza, who died May 8, 2010, at the age of 91; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Bertha Champion Garza was an exceptional citizen | ||
| who was widely admired in her community for her many | ||
| achievements; and | ||
| WHEREAS, She was born August 3, 1918, in Mercedes and moved | ||
| to Brownsville at a young age; she married Reynaldo Garza at | ||
| Sacred Heart Catholic Church on June 9, 1943, and they shared 61 | ||
| years of love and devotion and were blessed with a large and | ||
| loving family, who were a source of much pride and joy; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Garza was a devout Catholic who practiced her | ||
| faith in her daily life; she belonged to Sacred Heart Catholic | ||
| Church and Saint Mary's Catholic Church and was an active member | ||
| of the Altar and Rosary Society; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Garza participated in many community and | ||
| civic activities, including the Pan American Round Table I, the | ||
| Camille Lightner Playhouse, the Brownsville Art League, and the | ||
| Serape Club; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she | ||
| gave generously to others, and her wisdom, graciousness, and | ||
| valued counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew her; and | ||
| WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, | ||
| and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by | ||
| her family and many friends; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd | ||
| Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | ||
| family of Bertha Champion Garza: her sons and daughters-in-law, | ||
| Reynaldo Garza, Jr., and his wife, Trudy, David and Diane Garza, | ||
| and Ygnacio and Sylvia Garza; her daughters and son-in-law, | ||
| Bertha Garza Elizondo and her husband, Gustavo, and Monica Garza; | ||
| her sister, Theresa Champion; and her 12 grandchildren and five | ||
| great-grandchildren; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
| Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
| memory of Bertha Champion Garza. | ||
