SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 211
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the citizens of Waller County who are gathering in
Austin to celebrate Waller County Day at the State Capitol on
February 27, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Created by the Texas Legislature in 1873 from
sections of Austin and Grimes Counties, Waller County is named
for Edwin Waller, a signatory of the Texas Declaration of
Independence and the City of Austin's first mayor; and
WHEREAS, Waller County's early settlers were members of
Stephen F. Austin's original Texas colony, and the county served
as the site of an encampment for the army of General Sam Houston
in the Texas Revolution; and
WHEREAS, Before the discovery of oil in the 1930s, the
economy of Waller County was driven largely by agriculture, with
cotton being the foremost crop; a diverse population of African
Americans, Italians, Irish, Germans, Poles, and Czechs came to
the region in the late 18th century and early 19th century; and
WHEREAS, The citizens of Waller County are justly proud of
their county's distinguished history and the many contributions
its people have made to the growth and progress of our state; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
83rd Legislature, hereby recognize February 27, 2013, as Waller
County Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the
citizens of Waller County who have traveled to the Capitol for
this commemoration; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the Waller County delegation in honor of this special day.
