| David William Crews | ||
| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the | ||
| citizens of Conroe in mourning the loss of former state | ||
| representative and civic leader David William Crews, who died | ||
| February 8, 2015, at the age of 81; and | ||
| WHEREAS, This distinguished gentleman was widely respected | ||
| and admired for his many achievements and for his countless | ||
| contributions to the growth and prosperity of Conroe and | ||
| Montgomery County; and | ||
| WHEREAS, David Crews was born on February 18, 1933; he | ||
| established his legal practice in Conroe in 1957, and three years | ||
| later, he was elected to the Texas House of Representatives at | ||
| the age of 27; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Over the course of his legislative career, he | ||
| introduced a number of far-reaching pieces of legislation; most | ||
| notable of these was the resolution that led to the creation of | ||
| the George J. Beto Criminal Justice Center at Sam Houston State | ||
| University; one of the oldest criminal justice programs in the | ||
| nation, it has grown to become one of the largest and has gained | ||
| an international reputation for excellence; and | ||
| WHEREAS, His many other contributions to the area include | ||
| his role in the establishment of the Montgomery County Hospital | ||
| District, for which he served as legal counsel for many years; he | ||
| was also the longtime attorney for the Montgomery County Housing | ||
| Finance Corporation, and his efforts were essential in securing | ||
| the funding for the construction of North Loop 336 in Conroe; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Crews was active in a number of professional and | ||
| philanthropic organizations; he served on the boards of Allied | ||
| Conroe and Allied Jetero Banks, the Conroe YMCA, the Montgomery | ||
| County Food Bank, the Conroe Symphony, and Tri-County Services; he | ||
| was a longtime member of the Conroe Chamber of Commerce, which paid | ||
| tribute to him for his many contributions to the community by | ||
| placing his name on its Wall of Honor in 2010; and | ||
| WHEREAS, He was a man of courage, compassion, and integrity | ||
| who gave unselfishly to others, and his wisdom and his enthusiasm | ||
| for living each day to the fullest will not be forgotten; and | ||
| WHEREAS, He was devoted to his family, and he leaves behind | ||
| memories that will be cherished forever by all who were | ||
| privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th | ||
| Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | ||
| family of David William Crews; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his | ||
| family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate | ||
| and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of | ||
| David Crews. | ||
