| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to | ||
| recognize Leon Schmidt on the grand occasion of his 95th | ||
| birthday; and | ||
| WHEREAS, This distinguished gentleman is well known for | ||
| his wisdom and generosity of spirit, and he is a respected | ||
| citizen of Austin; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Leon Schmidt was born February 12, 1916, in | ||
| Yorktown, Texas; a 1932 graduate of Austin High School, he went | ||
| on to earn a bachelor's degree from The University of Texas and a | ||
| master's degree from Harvard University; he served the nation as | ||
| a first lieutenant in the United States Army in the Pacific | ||
| theater during World War II; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Schmidt married Barbara Cowen on October 11, | ||
| 1953, and the couple raised four children, Robert, Edythe, Rhona, | ||
| and Sue, who have been a source of much pride and joy; and | ||
| WHEREAS, In the late 1930s, along with his father, Jacob, | ||
| Mr. Schmidt opened Yaring's in Austin; it became an iconic | ||
| business noted for women's fashions and accessories, and for more | ||
| than 60 years offered personalized customer service to the Austin | ||
| community; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Active in community affairs, Mr. Schmidt has been | ||
| a generous donor to such organizations as Mexic-Arte, Court | ||
| Appointed Special Advocates for Children, the Dell Jewish | ||
| Community Center, and the Dell Children's Hospital; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A beloved and respected member of his community, | ||
| Mr. Schmidt is noted for his business acumen, his compassion for | ||
| others, and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; | ||
| now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd | ||
| Legislature, hereby commend Leon Schmidt on his many | ||
| achievements and extend to him best wishes for a memorable 95th | ||
| birthday; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. | ||
