SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 164
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program for its
outstanding work in helping prepare the young people of Texas to
become productive members of society; and
WHEREAS, The Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program
traces its roots to the Jack County Boys Corn Club, which was
founded in 1908 by Thomas M. Marks to teach young boys improved
methods of growing corn; other early forerunners include the
Milam County Girls Tomato Club and efforts in Waller County to
offer opportunities for African American children to learn to
supplement their families' diets by growing vegetables and
  raising poultry; and
WHEREAS, Today, Texas 4-H is conducted by the Texas
AgriLife Extension Service and the Prairie View A&M Cooperative
Extension Program and it provides young people with
opportunities to learn and practice life skills, develop strong
character, and improve their readiness for college and the
  workplace; and
WHEREAS, The 4-H pledge and motto encourage wise and
productive use of the four Hs, which stand for head, heart,
hands, and health; through the years the millions of young people
in Texas who have taken advantage of 4-H programs have enriched
their own lives and have contributed significantly to our state
and our nation; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
