SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 161
In Memory
of
Edwin de Steiguer Snead
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens
of Georgetown in mourning the loss of Edwin de Steiguer "Ned"
Snead, who has died at the age of 85; and
WHEREAS, Ned Snead was born on December 2, 1929, in
Texarkana, to Edward Brazelton and Annie Louise Snead; from an
early age, he was fascinated by tools and machinery; he attended
Texas A&M University, where he was a member of the Corps of
Cadets, and he graduated with honors with a degree in mechanical
engineering; and
WHEREAS, After serving in the United States Air Force
during the Korean War, he returned to Texas and began working as
the sole engineer for his father's company, Texas Crushed Stone;
he was named president of the company in 1958, and he created a
financial plan that served the company well for many years; and
WHEREAS, A dynamic businessman, he established a software
company in the 1970s and eventually left Texas Crushed Stone to
found Georgetown Rail Equipment, a trendsetting company in
railway technology; the company's innovations included the
DumpTrain aggregate delivery system, which was a breakthrough
in productivity for the rail industry; his company played an
important role in the success of Georgetown's Texas
Life-Sciences Collaboration Center; and
WHEREAS, He was the author of several books, including an
autobiography, You Ain't Gonna Believe This: Ned Snead's Work in
Progress, and the story of his candidacy for the United States
Senate, The Ex-Candidate; and
WHEREAS, He was a man of many interests and talents who
gave generously to the Georgetown community; he was an inventor
and a visionary, and his enthusiasm for living each day to the
fullest will not be forgotten; and
WHEREAS, He was devoted to his family, and he leaves behind
memories that will be treasured forever by all who were
privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
family of Edwin de Steiguer Snead; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
memory of Edwin de Steiguer Snead.
