| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to | ||
| join citizens across the state in observing February 2, 2011, as | ||
| LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day at the Capitol; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Cancer is the leading cause of death among Texas | ||
| women age 35 to 74, and 50 percent of men in Texas will be | ||
| diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life; each year the | ||
| deadly disease costs Texans approximately $30 billion; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The Lance Armstrong Foundation was founded by | ||
| world champion cyclist Lance Armstrong in 1997, and in 2003 | ||
| LIVESTRONG.org was created as an online resource for cancer | ||
| survivors; LIVESTRONG encourages collaboration, knowledge-sharing, | ||
| and partnership within the cancer community to address the unmet | ||
| needs of cancer survivors, and it supports these endeavors | ||
| through leadership, funding, and training; and | ||
| WHEREAS, LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day was organized to bring | ||
| together those who have been directly or indirectly affected by | ||
| cancer and to advocate for cancer education, prevention, screening, | ||
| and early detection efforts; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The LIVESTRONG manifesto states that unity is | ||
| strength, knowledge is power, and attitude is everything, and | ||
| LIVESTRONG Texas Advocacy Day exemplifies the strength and | ||
| spirit of people affected by cancer throughout the state; now, | ||
| therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd | ||
| Legislature, hereby recognize February 2, 2011, as LIVESTRONG | ||
| Texas Advocacy Day at the Capitol and commend the Lance Armstrong | ||
| Foundation on its exceptional efforts to bring people together to | ||
| fight cancer; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an | ||
| expression of high regard from the Texas Senate. | ||
