| Arthur Carroll Reyna | ||
| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and | ||
| commemorates the life of Arthur Carroll "Sonny" Reyna, who died | ||
| December 31, 2014, at the age of 88; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Sonny Reyna was born on July 22, 1926, in Rio | ||
| Grande City, to Arturo Clemente Reyna and Carolina Maria Vale | ||
| Reyna; he learned the value of hard work at a young age by taking | ||
| jobs delivering telegrams and newspapers; and | ||
| WHEREAS, At the age of 16, he entered the United States | ||
| Navy in order to serve his country in World War II; after the war, | ||
| he earned a degree from Saint Mary's University, where he was a | ||
| member of the International Relations Club and served as cadet | ||
| commander of the Reserve Officers' Training Corps Band; and | ||
| WHEREAS, He was commissioned as an officer in the United | ||
| States Army; he later transferred to the United States Air Force | ||
| and served with distinction in the Office of Special | ||
| Investigations during the Korean War; he went on to serve as a | ||
| captain in the United States Air Force Reserve and later as an | ||
| advisor to the United States Army in Vietnam; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Reyna was employed by the United States | ||
| Department of Defense in 1959 as an English teacher; he later | ||
| supervised more than 250 teachers at the Lackland Air Force Base | ||
| Defense Language Institute and received the first Women's | ||
| Federal Employees Award for his role in advocating for women's | ||
| employment rights in the federal government; he established | ||
| English language training programs in military departments in | ||
| countries around the world; and | ||
| WHEREAS, He married his beloved wife, Frankie Guilbeau | ||
| Reyna, in 1955; they raised six children, Arthur, Samuel, | ||
| Frank, Juan, Mary, and Laura, and were blessed with seven | ||
| grandchildren; and | ||
| WHEREAS, He was active in a wide range of community | ||
| organizations, including the Lackland Independent School | ||
| District Board of Trustees, the Northwest YMCA Board of | ||
| Directors, the Boy Scouts of America, and the Asociación | ||
| Internacional de Clubes Sembradores de Amistad; he was an | ||
| accomplished musician and played the trumpet in the San Fernando | ||
| Cathedral Mariachi Choir; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he | ||
| gave generously to others, and he will long be remembered for his | ||
| wisdom, his wit and humor, and his enthusiasm for living each day | ||
| to the fullest; and | ||
| WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and | ||
| grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured | ||
| forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th | ||
| Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved | ||
| family of Arthur Carroll Reyna; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
| Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
| memory of Arthur Carroll Reyna. | ||
