SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 13
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the First Presbyterian Church in Galveston on the grand
occasion of its 175th anniversary, which is being celebrated
January 17 and 18, 2015; and
WHEREAS, First Presbyterian Church was organized by local
citizens on January 1, 1840, when Galveston Island was home to
only a few hundred residents; the sanctuary that was erected on
the southwest corner of 19th and Church Streets was the first
church constructed on the island; and
WHEREAS, Over the years, the church has served as a refuge
to the public during hurricanes and other times of crisis; though
it has seen extensive damage, the structure has remained
unshaken, and the sanctuary has been restored to its original
grandeur; and
WHEREAS, Under the wise stewardship of its pastors, the
First Presbyterian Church has served both its membership and
other people of Galveston through its mission and ministry
programs, and it will continue to serve the citizens of Galveston
for generations to come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
84th Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to the clergy
and members of First Presbyterian Church in Galveston and best
wishes to all for a joyous 175th anniversary celebration; and, be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the church as a token of esteem from the Texas Senate.
