| WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to | ||
| recognize Dr. John William Hellerstedt for his distinguished | ||
| leadership as commissioner of the Texas Department of State | ||
| Health Services and his many contributions to the welfare of the | ||
| citizens of Texas; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Dr. John Hellerstedt is well known for his | ||
| exceptional career of service to others as a physician, a medical | ||
| administrator, and a leader in the field of public health; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Dr. Hellerstedt earned his medical degree from | ||
| the University of Pittsburgh and completed his residency at The | ||
| University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio; he | ||
| moved to Austin in 1981 and practiced pediatrics for 18 years at | ||
| Austin Regional Clinic; and | ||
| WHEREAS, He transitioned into public health administration | ||
| in 2000, when he joined the Texas Department of State Health | ||
| Services as medical director of the Bureau of Medicaid Managed | ||
| Care and CHIP; he joined the Texas Health and Human Services | ||
| Commission the following year, and he served the state with | ||
| distinction for seven years before accepting the position of vice | ||
| president of medical affairs at Dell Children's Medical Center of | ||
| Central Texas; he went on to join Seton Family of Hospitals and | ||
| served as chief medical officer; in January of 2016, he returned | ||
| to the Texas Department of State Health Services to serve as | ||
| commissioner; and | ||
| WHEREAS, As head of one of the state's largest agencies, | ||
| Dr. Hellerstedt oversees a staff of 12,000 employees and an annual | ||
| budget of $3.3 billion; under his leadership, the agency is well | ||
| equipped to achieve its vision of "A Healthy Texas" and to carry out | ||
| the implementation of programs that focus on disease prevention, | ||
| disaster preparedness, community health services, environmental | ||
| and consumer safety, and mental health services; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A highly regarded public leader, he serves on the | ||
| boards of numerous professional associations, and he is a | ||
| contributing author of Preparing for Pandemics in the Modern | ||
| World, published by Texas A&M University Press; he is a truly | ||
| remarkable Texan whose dedication to public service and to his | ||
| work in the field of medicine has made a difference in the lives | ||
| of innumerable families; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 87th | ||
| Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commend Dr. John William | ||
| Hellerstedt on his exemplary career of service and his lasting | ||
| contributions to the citizens of Texas and extend to him best | ||
| wishes in all his endeavors; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
| him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. | ||
