R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their
  memories of Susan Gallaher Merritt of Quitman, who passed away on
  January 20, 2023, at the age of 89; and
         WHEREAS, The daughter of John Henderson Gallaher III and
  Elise Haren Gallaher, the former Susan Gallaher was born in Kansas
  City, Missouri, on September 17, 1933, and she grew up with the
  companionship of her brother, John; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Merritt shared a rewarding marriage with her
  husband, Dr. Ben Merritt, until his passing; she was the proud
  mother of five children, David, Julie, Scott, Todd, and the late
  Molly Merritt; over the years, she had the pleasure of welcoming
  into her family six grandchildren, Kelly, Kimberly, Merritt, Ben,
  Sam, and Jake, and two great-grandchildren, Avery and Bryce; and
         WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Quitman, Mrs. Merritt was
  involved in a number of local organizations, including the Quitman
  Garden Club, the bridge club, and the Quitman Cemetery Association;
  she was also a member of the hospital board, and she played an
  instrumental role in establishing the East Texas Medical Center
  location in Quitman; during her leisure hours, she enjoyed
  traveling, scuba diving, completing needlework projects, and
  cooking; and
         WHEREAS, Susan Merritt lived a rich and purposeful life
  devoted to her family and her community, and she leaves behind a
  legacy of service to others that will continue to inspire all those
  who knew and loved her; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the 88th Texas Legislature
  hereby pay tribute to the memory of Susan Gallaher Merritt and
  extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of her family: to her
  children, David Merritt and his wife, Leslie, Julie Young and her
  husband, Wayne, Scott Merritt, and Todd Merritt and his wife,
  Natalie; to her grandchildren, Kelly, Kimberly, Merritt, Ben, Sam,
  and Jake; to her great-grandchildren, Avery and Bryce; and to her
  other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this
  day, it do so in memory of Susan Merritt.
