Dorothy Barbara Williams Bickham | ||
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and | ||
commemorates the life of Dorothy Barbara Williams Bickham, who | ||
died in June of 2013 at the age of 88; and | ||
WHEREAS, Dorothy Barbara Williams was born June 19, 1924, | ||
in Oklahoma City to Beatrice and Edwin Williams; she was a | ||
graduate of Douglass High School, where she played violin in the | ||
orchestra and was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps and the | ||
Girl Reserves; and | ||
WHEREAS, She earned a bachelor's degree in music from Fisk | ||
University, and while she was studying for her master's degree at | ||
the University of Michigan, she met her future husband, Luzine | ||
Bickham; and | ||
WHEREAS, After their marriage, the couple moved to | ||
Houston, and Mrs. Bickham began a long and fulfilling career as | ||
an educator; over the years, she had a profound impact on the | ||
lives of thousands of students; she was a beloved teacher who | ||
instilled in her students a sense of pride and a lifelong love of | ||
learning; and | ||
WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced her faith in her | ||
daily life, Mrs. Bickham was a faithful, longtime member of | ||
Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, where she served | ||
as Chancel Choir pianist for more than 40 years; she was also a | ||
member of numerous committees and ministries and was honored as | ||
Mother of the Year in 1981 by the Servettes; and | ||
WHEREAS, She was active in many community organizations, | ||
including the Houston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta | ||
Sorority, Incorporated, the Friends of Houston Ebony Opera | ||
Guild, and the Parkwood Drive Civic Club; and | ||
WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she | ||
gave generously to others, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued | ||
counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew her; and | ||
WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, | ||
and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by | ||
her family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere | ||
condolences to the bereaved family of Dorothy Barbara Williams | ||
Bickham; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
memory of Dorothy Bickham. | ||
