WHEREAS, The Rotary Club of Tyler celebrated its centennial | ||
in 2020; and | ||
WHEREAS, Chartered on May 1, 1920, under the leadership of | ||
founding president T. H. Shelby, the club still operates under its | ||
original charter today; its membership of more than 250 | ||
civic-minded individuals met in the Blackstone Hotel for many | ||
years, and it was popularly known as the Downtown Rotary Club; and | ||
WHEREAS, The group has demonstrated an exceptional | ||
commitment to education through the decades, highlighting the | ||
accomplishments of outstanding seniors from area high schools and | ||
hosting the annual Young Citizens Club banquet; moreover, it has | ||
donated funds and provided support to all of the city's major civic | ||
organizations, among them the Literacy Council of Tyler, the East | ||
Texas Symphony Orchestra, the Texas Rose Festival, and the Tyler | ||
Museum of Art; and | ||
WHEREAS, Recognizing health care needs in the community, the | ||
Rotarians have made gifts of significant impact to numerous | ||
organizations, including the Bethesda Health Clinic, the Tyler | ||
Junior College Robert M. Rogers Nursing & Health Sciences Center | ||
Dental Clinic, and The University of Texas Health Science Center at | ||
Tyler; and | ||
WHEREAS, Guided by the motto "Service Above Self," members of | ||
the Rotary Club of Tyler have played a vital role in the betterment | ||
of their community for over a century, earning the deep admiration | ||
and appreciation of their fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the 87th Legislature of the State of Texas | ||
hereby commemorate the centennial of the Rotary Club of Tyler and | ||
extend to its members sincere best wishes for continued success in | ||
their important work; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for the organization as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives and Senate. | ||
