WHEREAS, The primary responsibility of public officials is to | ||
keep our citizens safe; and | ||
WHEREAS, Law enforcement officials who refuse to comply with, | ||
honor, and fulfill requests included in an immigration detainer | ||
issued by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement | ||
jeopardize the safety of the citizens of Texas; and | ||
WHEREAS, Failing to honor immigration detainers invites | ||
illegal and criminal activity; and | ||
WHEREAS, Successful law enforcement requires the | ||
coordination and cooperation of many agencies and entities across | ||
all levels of government; and | ||
WHEREAS, Failing to coordinate and cooperate with other law | ||
enforcement agencies is a failure of a sworn duty to protect the | ||
public and uphold the laws of our state and nation; and | ||
WHEREAS, With our border yet to be secured, municipalities | ||
should not enact policies that turn a blind eye to the criminal | ||
activity of those who enter our country illegally and then continue | ||
to break our laws; and | ||
WHEREAS, Efforts to secure our border must be accompanied by | ||
eliminating lures such as sanctuary policies that attract illegal | ||
immigrants; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the 85th Legislature of the State of Texas | ||
call on sheriffs' offices in all 254 counties in Texas to comply | ||
with, honor, and fulfill requests included in an immigration | ||
detainer issued by United States Immigration and Customs | ||
Enforcement. |
