| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
| SECTION 1. Section 25.092, Education Code, is amended by | ||
| adding Subsection (a-3) to read as follows: | ||
| (a-3) In determining if a student has complied with | ||
| attendance requirements under Subsection (a), the school district | ||
| may not include any absence of a student from class if the student | ||
| is absent to attend an extracurricular activity. In this | ||
| subsection "extracurricular activity" means a voluntary activity | ||
| sponsored by the school district and includes preparation for and | ||
| involvement in public performances, contests, athletic | ||
| competitions, demonstrations, displays, and club activities. | ||
| SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2017-2018 | ||
| school year. | ||
| SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
| a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
| provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
| Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
| Act takes effect September 1, 2017. | ||
