| to create a nonvoting parent trustee position on the board. | ||
| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
| SECTION 1. Subchapter C, Chapter 11, Education Code, is | ||
| amended by adding Section 11.0512 to read as follows: | ||
| Sec. 11.0512. PARENT TRUSTEE. (a) In addition to the | ||
| number of trustees of a school district as provided by Section | ||
| 11.051, the board of trustees of each school district must include | ||
| as a nonvoting member a parent trustee as provided by this section. | ||
| (b) For a parent trustee under this section, the board shall | ||
| adopt a policy that establishes: | ||
| (1) the term of the parent trustee; | ||
| (2) the procedures for selecting a parent trustee, | ||
| including the method for filling a vacancy; and | ||
| (3) the procedures for removal of a parent trustee. | ||
| (c) A person is eligible to serve as a parent trustee for a | ||
| school district if the person is the parent of a student who is | ||
| currently enrolled in the school district. | ||
| (d) The board shall adopt a policy regarding parent trustee: | ||
| (1) participation, other than voting, in board | ||
| deliberations; and | ||
| (2) access to information, documents, and records, | ||
| consistent with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of | ||
| 1974 (20 U.S.C. Section 1232g). | ||
| SECTION 2. This Act takes effect December 1, 2017. | ||
