A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 
AN ACT
  relating to the inclusion of a mental health course in the required
  curriculum for public high school students.
         BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
         SECTION 1.  Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by
  adding Subsection (c-4) to read as follows:
         (c-4)  The State Board of Education shall adopt rules
  requiring students to complete at least one mental health course
  while in high school that satisfies the requirements of Subsection
  (a)(2)(B)(ii) and includes:
               (1)  instruction regarding:
                     (A)  depression;
                     (B)  anxiety;
                     (C)  eating disorders;
                     (D)  schizophrenia; and
                     (E)  other mental health disorders; and
               (2)  information about cultivating coping skills and
  seeking available mental health services.
         SECTION 2.  This Act applies beginning with the 2024-2025
  school year.
         SECTION 3.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
  a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
  provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
  Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
  Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
