WHEREAS, Esteemed jurist Jack Humphrey Holland of Brownsboro | ||
passed away on June 10, 2022, at the age of 92, bringing a great loss | ||
to his family and friends; and | ||
WHEREAS, The son of Richard Frazer Holland and Rena Trueheart | ||
Lewis Holland, Jack Holland was born in Athens, Texas, on June 8, | ||
1930; he grew up with six siblings, Richard, Ben, Jerry, Emma Jo, | ||
Mary Ruth, and Jane Ann, and served his country in the United States | ||
Air Force; after attending the University of North Texas and | ||
Harvard University, he completed his law degree at The University | ||
of Texas; he worked as an assistant trust officer before returning | ||
to his hometown to practice law and serve as county attorney; in | ||
1969, he was appointed district judge of the newly created 173rd | ||
District Court, and he went on to serve in that capacity for more | ||
than 35 years, the second-longest tenure of any district court | ||
judge in the state; and | ||
WHEREAS, Following his retirement in 2005, Judge Holland | ||
continued to benefit his fellow citizens as city attorney for the | ||
City of Athens and municipal judge for Gun Barrel City; he also | ||
maintained a private practice, and he was recognized for his | ||
extensive efforts in behalf of pro bono clients; active in such | ||
community organizations as Athens Masonic Lodge No. 165 and the | ||
Rotary Club of Athens, he was a founding member of Athens Chapter | ||
No. 54 of the Texas Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; | ||
moreover, he was a longtime member of the First United Methodist | ||
Church and belonged to United Methodist Men; and | ||
WHEREAS, Judge Holland was the proud father of a son, Joseph; | ||
preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Holland, he was fortunate | ||
to find love a second time with Minnie Louetta Holland; with their | ||
marriage, he gained two stepsons, Todd and Chad Wright, and a | ||
stepdaughter, Shannon Wright, as well as 10 step-grandchildren and | ||
4 step-great-grandchildren; his gracious, soft-spoken ways and | ||
great kindness brought him many friendships; known for his love of | ||
dancing, he was especially happy two-stepping to Bob Wills's "Faded | ||
Love"; he also enjoyed reading, playing bridge, and fishing; and | ||
WHEREAS, Although Jack Holland is deeply missed by those he | ||
left behind, his legacy of service will be remembered and admired | ||
for years to come; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of the Honorable Jack | ||
Humphrey Holland and extend sincere sympathy to all who mourn his | ||
passing; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of | ||
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jack | ||
Holland. | ||
