| WHEREAS, The city of Victoria lost an admired civic leader | ||
| with the passing of Dorothy Jean Walston Alcorn on February 26, | ||
| 2017, at the age of 86; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Born in Houston on January 24, 1931, the former | ||
| Dorothy Walston was the daughter of Virgil and Dorothy Walston; she | ||
| graduated from Midland High School and completed her bachelor's | ||
| degree in English and education at the University of Houston; in | ||
| 1952, she married Charles W. "Chuck" Alcorn Jr., and they became the | ||
| parents of three children, Dorothy, Lexey, and Charles; Mrs. Alcorn | ||
| taught third grade for three years while residing in Abilene, and | ||
| the family later lived in Midland and Andrews before settling in | ||
| Victoria in 1961; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Alcorn became involved in higher education | ||
| advocacy after completing a master of arts in interdisciplinary | ||
| studies degree in creative writing and English at the University of | ||
| Houston-Victoria; in 1987, she was appointed to the University of | ||
| Houston System Board of Regents, and during her six-year tenure, | ||
| she served as board secretary and as chair of the Facilities and | ||
| Planning Committee; she also supervised the renovation of the | ||
| Wortham House, home of the UH chancellor; a longtime member of the | ||
| UHV President's Advisory Board, she served on three president's | ||
| search committees; she hosted myriad university functions at her | ||
| home, and her efforts in behalf of the UHV/American Book Review | ||
| Reading Series helped enhance community interest in literature; in | ||
| 1993, the university named its Dorothy Alcorn Auditorium in her | ||
| honor, and the following year, she received the institution's | ||
| highest honor, the Presidential Medal; she donated her home to UHV | ||
| in 2015 for use as the president's residence; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Over the years, Mrs. Alcorn served in numerous | ||
| leadership roles, including president of the Victoria Junior League | ||
| and chair of the renovation committees for the Victoria Courthouse | ||
| and O'Connor-Proctor Building; she was also a member of the | ||
| Victoria Performing Arts Steering Committee and the Victoria | ||
| Airport Commission, among many other civic groups; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Dorothy Alcorn gave freely of her time, talents, and | ||
| resources to benefit higher education and the arts, and her | ||
| devotion to her family and her community will remain a source of | ||
| inspiration to all who were privileged to know her; now, therefore, | ||
| be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dorothy Alcorn and | ||
| extend sincere sympathy to her loved ones; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of | ||
| Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dorothy | ||
| Alcorn. | ||
