R E S O L U T I O N

|
WHEREAS, Elandon Roberts of the New England Patriots enjoyed |
|
|
an unforgettable NFL rookie season that culminated in winning Super |
|
|
Bowl LI at NRG Stadium in Houston on February 5, 2017; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A member of the Class of 2012 at Memorial High School |
|
|
in Port Arthur, Elandon Roberts began his collegiate football |
|
|
career playing linebacker for a season at Morgan State University, |
|
|
where he was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of |
|
|
the Week three times and where he earned All-Conference Second Team |
|
|
honors; he subsequently transferred to the University of Houston, |
|
|
and over the course of three years, he accumulated 175 tackles, 7 |
|
|
sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and an interception; those impressive |
|
|
statistics caught the attention of professional football scouts, |
|
|
and he was selected in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the |
|
|
Patriots; soon thereafter, the proud Cougar graduated with a |
|
|
bachelor's degree in sociology; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Roberts made his NFL debut on September 18, |
|
|
2016, and in 13 regular-season games, he tallied 45 tackles, three |
|
|
of which were for loss of yards, and a forced fumble; continuing to |
|
|
bolster the New England defense in the postseason, he notched three |
|
|
tackles against the Houston Texans in the divisional round and two |
|
|
tackles against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the American Football |
|
|
Conference Championship Game; he then played an essential role in |
|
|
one of the greatest comeback stories in Super Bowl history, |
|
|
delivering two tackles against the Atlanta Falcons as the Patriots |
|
|
overcame a 25-point deficit to win in overtime by a final score of |
|
|
34-28; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Demonstrating hard work, fine sportsmanship, and an |
|
|
unwavering commitment to excellence along the way, Elandon Roberts |
|
|
capped a storybook season by earning a piece of the coveted Lombardi |
|
|
Trophy, and his remarkable achievements are a source of great pride |
|
|
to his fellow Texans; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Elandon Roberts on winning Super |
|
|
Bowl LI and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; |
|
|
and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Mr. Roberts as an expression of high regard by the |
|
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
