| WHEREAS, St. Philip's College in San Antonio is unveiling the | ||
| Honorable Ruth Jones McClendon Collection with a ribbon-cutting | ||
| ceremony on February 28, 2017; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Ruth Jones McClendon served on the San Antonio City | ||
| Council for three years before winning election to the District 120 | ||
| seat in the Texas House of Representatives in 1996; over the course | ||
| of two decades of service in the state legislature, she gained | ||
| prominence for her advocacy in behalf of children and the elderly; | ||
| moreover, she distinguished herself as chair of the Rules and | ||
| Resolutions Committee and as chair of budget and oversight for the | ||
| Pensions and Investments Committee, as well as through her work as a | ||
| member of the Appropriations Committee and numerous other | ||
| committees; she is the recipient of a host of awards and honors, | ||
| including the 2006 Regional and State Legislator of the Year Awards | ||
| from the Texas Council of Child Welfare Boards and the 2009 | ||
| Outstanding Leadership Award from the Texas Criminal Justice | ||
| Coalition; she retired from office on January 31, 2016; and | ||
| WHEREAS, St. Philip's College, which is the only institution | ||
| of higher education in the country to be federally designated as | ||
| both a Historically Black College and a Hispanic-Serving | ||
| Institution, has amassed an impressive collection of materials from | ||
| Ms. McClendon's time in office at both the municipal and state | ||
| levels; highlights from the archive are being placed on display, | ||
| including awards, certificates, diplomas, books, and photographs, | ||
| all of which help provide insight into her life and career; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A highly esteemed stateswoman, Ruth Jones McClendon | ||
| served her fellow citizens with tremendous commitment and | ||
| enthusiasm for nearly a quarter century; this collection stands as | ||
| a fitting tribute to her legacy, and it is sure to be a source of | ||
| inspiration for others who aspire to work in behalf of their | ||
| community; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby commemorate the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the | ||
| Honorable Ruth Jones McClendon Collection at St. Philip's College | ||
| and commend all those who helped bring this worthwhile project to | ||
| fruition; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for St. Philip's College as an expression of high regard | ||
| by the Texas House of Representatives. | ||
