R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The John Dewey Municipal Justice Center opened on
  February 5, 2011, and this impressive facility is a fitting tribute
  to the long and successful service of Lake Jackson city attorney
  John Dewey; and
         WHEREAS, Hailing from Delaware, Ohio, Mr. Dewey was a
  10-letter athlete and merit scholar at Delaware Hayes High School
  and was later inducted into the school's athletic hall of fame; he
  went on to earn a degree from Ohio State University in 1961 and then
  served in the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command in Asia from 1963
  to 1969, ultimately rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the
  Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps; and
         WHEREAS, After returning to the United States, Mr. Dewey
  earned his juris doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin
  School of Law and started a private practice in Lake Jackson,
  focusing on utility, corporate, and elections law; he became city
  attorney for Lake Jackson in 1973, beginning an association with
  the city that would last for 34 years, and he provided exemplary
  assistance to council members navigating the intricacies of
  municipal government law; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Dewey has shared his time and talents as chair of
  the legislative committee of the Brazoria County Bar Association
  and the District 5 State Bar Admissions Committee; he received a
  lifetime achievement award from the Texas City Attorneys
  Association in 2006; and
         WHEREAS, An active member of his community, Mr. Dewey has
  coached youth baseball and chaired the Brazoria County Cancer
  Society, and he has further distinguished himself as a member of the
  Brazosport Area Chamber of Commerce, the Noon Lions Club, the 100
  Club of Brazoria County, and the Lake Jackson Business Association;
  and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Dewey was always interested in politics, and he
  became involved with the Republican Party of Brazoria County in
  1974, when there were only 600 Republicans voting in the primary; he
  was part of the continued growth of the party, serving in the
  vanguard of the Reagan Revolution as a Houston area leader in 1976,
  1980, and 1984 and as chair of the Republican Party of Brazoria
  County from 1980 to 1986, when the party experienced unprecedented
  growth to over 15,000 primary voters; he continues to be active with
  the group today, with his wife serving as party chair for the past
  10 years; and
         WHEREAS, Over the course of his career, John Dewey has made
  enormous contributions to the Lake Jackson area, and the justice
  center named in his honor will serve as a lasting reminder of his
  notable work; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the dedication of the John Dewey
  Municipal Justice Center in Lake Jackson and extend to Mr. Dewey
  sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Dewey as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
