| WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the | ||
| death of Alma Faye Madden of Amarillo on August 26, 2012, at the age | ||
| of 82; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Alma Madden, affectionately called "Abbie," was | ||
| born in Texas to Clyde and Jessie Faye Cowden; after graduating from | ||
| Midland Lee High School, she went on to earn a bachelor's degree in | ||
| liberal arts from The University of Texas; and | ||
| WHEREAS, During her years at UT, she met Wales Hendrix | ||
| Madden, Jr., who served as student body president, and the couple | ||
| were married in 1952; they settled in Amarillo, and over the course | ||
| of their rewarding 60-year marriage, they were blessed with two | ||
| children, Wales and Tawney, as well as seven grandchildren and six | ||
| great-grandchildren; and | ||
| WHEREAS, In addition to helping manage her family's oil | ||
| business, Mrs. Madden contributed in myriad ways to the life of her | ||
| community; a champion of many worthy causes, she served as | ||
| president of the Junior League of Amarillo for four years, promoted | ||
| the advancement of Amarillo College, and funded a scholarship in | ||
| visual arts at West Texas A&M University; she also rendered | ||
| outstanding service to her alma mater, endowing a professorship in | ||
| the university's College of Liberal Arts and serving on several UT | ||
| boards; and | ||
| WHEREAS, This esteemed philanthropist was a talented artist | ||
| and the creator of more than 150 works in oil, charcoal, and | ||
| watercolor, many of which she gave to friends or auctioned in behalf | ||
| of charity; her painting "The Wedding Feast at Cana" hangs in the | ||
| Great Hall of the First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Devoted to her family, her faith, and her community, | ||
| Abbie Madden gave freely of her time and energy to make the world | ||
| around her a better place, and although she is deeply missed, | ||
| memories of this beloved woman remain to inspire all those who were | ||
| privileged to know her; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Alma Faye Madden and | ||
| extend sincere condolences to the members of her family: to her | ||
| husband, Wales Madden, Jr.; to her children, Wales Madden III and | ||
| his wife, Nita, and Tawney Macfarlan and her husband, Dean; to her | ||
| grandchildren, Shawnee Hancock and her husband, Nick, Mac Macfarlan | ||
| and his wife, Sophie, Wales Madden IV and his wife, Lauren, Brandy | ||
| Thompson, Callie Nixon and her husband, Ryan, Hamilton Madden, and | ||
| Cody Jennings; to her six great-grandchildren; and to her other | ||
| relatives and friends; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of | ||
| Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Alma Faye | ||
| Madden. | ||
