WHEREAS, Many proud Texans are gathering in Austin on | ||
February 18, 2015, to celebrate Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi | ||
Day at the State Capitol; and | ||
WHEREAS, Founded on Ward Island in 1947 as the University of | ||
Corpus Christi, the school was originally affiliated with the | ||
Baptist General Convention of Texas and had an initial enrollment | ||
of just over 300; the campus suffered significant damage from | ||
Hurricane Celia in 1970, and the following year, the legislature | ||
authorized the establishment of an upper-level institution by the | ||
Texas A&I University System; and | ||
WHEREAS, The campus joined the A&M System in 1989 and four | ||
years later, the board of regents chose the name Texas A&M | ||
University–Corpus Christi; as it expanded to become a four-year | ||
comprehensive university, enrollment increased to 5,000 students | ||
in 1993; the institution revived its intercollegiate athletics | ||
program, and in 2005, it opened the College of Nursing and Health | ||
Sciences; and | ||
WHEREAS, Today, under the leadership of president and chief | ||
executive officer Dr. Flavius Killebrew, this noted doctoral | ||
research university has an enrollment of approximately 10,000 | ||
students hailing from 48 states and nearly 70 countries; | ||
bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees are offered in the five | ||
colleges: Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Health | ||
Sciences, and Science and Engineering; with a favorable 20:1 | ||
student-faculty ratio, the institution can offer a personalized | ||
approach to learning, and 90 percent of the instructors hold the | ||
highest degree attainable in their field; and | ||
WHEREAS, Taking a key role in a new era in aviation | ||
technology, TAMU–Corpus Christi has been designated by the Federal | ||
Aviation Administration as an unmanned aircraft system test site; | ||
moreover, the university's Harte Research Institute for Gulf of | ||
Mexico Studies was selected by the Texas Commission on | ||
Environmental Quality as one of two consortia in the state's | ||
Research Centers of Excellence under the RESTORE Act created in | ||
response to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill; and | ||
WHEREAS, Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi provides | ||
students with a strong foundation for achievement, and its | ||
commitment to the advancement of human knowledge contributes | ||
immeasurably to the prosperity and vitality of the Lone Star State; | ||
now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby recognize February 18, 2015, as Texas A&M | ||
University–Corpus Christi Day at the State Capitol and extend to | ||
all those participating sincere best wishes for an informative and | ||
enjoyable event. | ||
