R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Family, friends, and members of the community will
  treasure their memories of Larry B. Smith, the former editor and
  publisher of the Brady Standard-Herald, who died on January 21,
  2015, at the age of 74; and
         WHEREAS, Born to L. B. and Vivian Smith, Larry Smith played
  football for the Brady High School Bulldogs, and after graduating
  in 1958, he attended Texas A&M University on a football scholarship
  and earned a degree in journalism in 1962; answering his nation's
  call to duty during the Vietnam era, he served in the U.S. Navy and
  won a commendation from the commander of the USS Yorktown; and
         WHEREAS, In 1967, Mr. Smith returned to Brady with his new
  bride, the former Mary Ann Greene; when his parents moved to Austin
  to serve in the administration of Governor Preston Smith, he took
  over his father's role as editor of the Standard-Herald, becoming
  only the third person in the 105 years of the paper's history to
  hold the position; in 1986, he became the paper's owner and
  continued to serve as both editor and publisher until he concluded
  his career in 2009; and
         WHEREAS, In retirement, Mr. Smith continued to help out at
  the paper from time to time, but he devoted much of his energy to
  playing golf with his friends and visiting golf courses around the
  world; he remained faithful to the Brady Bulldogs, often sitting in
  the press box during games; he was also in the congregations of the
  First United Methodist Church and Vision Heights Church of Christ;
  and
         WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Larry
  Smith was a true newspaperman and a champion of his community, and
  he leaves behind a legacy of service to others that will continue to
  inspire all those who knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Larry B. Smith and
  extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
  wife, Mary Ann Greene Smith; to his daughter, Holly Smith Stewart
  and her husband, James; to his son, Zack B. Smith and his wife,
  Sarah; to his grandchildren, Brynn and Samuel Stewart and Emma and
  Southern Smith; to his sister, Sherron Snead; and to his other
  relatives and friends; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Larry B.
  Smith.
