R E S O L U T I O N
|

|
|
WHEREAS, The citizens of Georgetown lost one of their most |
|
|
admired community leaders with the passing of Camille Ann Garey on |
|
|
November 9, 2012, at the age of 71; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Born in Austin on August 9, 1941, the former Cammy |
|
|
Blackmore was the daughter of Roland and Velma Blackmore; she led |
|
|
the varsity cheerleading squad at Georgetown High School and was |
|
|
involved in the school's theater program and in Girl Scouts; in |
|
|
1958, she was crowned "Miss Williamson County"; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, After graduating, she went on to attend The |
|
|
University of Texas at Austin and The University of Texas Medical |
|
|
Branch at Galveston, where she earned a degree in physical therapy; |
|
|
later in her life, she continued her studies at Kaiser Permanente |
|
|
Hayward Medical Center and completed a degree in advanced |
|
|
orthopedic physical therapy; she enjoyed a highly successful |
|
|
career, and from 1980 to 1986, she was the owner and senior |
|
|
therapist at her own practice, Southwest Austin Physical Therapy |
|
|
Clinic; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, On New Year's Day in 1983, she exchanged vows with |
|
|
Jack Garey, and they went on to enjoy three rewarding decades |
|
|
together; they shared an interest in cattle breeding, and Ms. Garey |
|
|
became the first female president of the Texas Brangus Breeders |
|
|
Association; well-known philanthropists, Mr. and Ms. Garey donated |
|
|
$12 million to Southwestern University to fund scholarships for |
|
|
students in need, and they also pledged their 525-acre ranch to the |
|
|
city for use as a public park; in recognition of their contributions |
|
|
to the betterment of the community, the couple received the Jesse |
|
|
"Buz" Sawyer Award for Philanthropy from the Georgetown Chamber of |
|
|
Commerce; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Garey further distinguished herself as |
|
|
executive chair of the boards of the Chisholm Trail Community |
|
|
Foundation, the Georgetown Women's Club, and the Georgetown |
|
|
Healthcare System Auxiliary; moreover, she was a trustee for |
|
|
Southwestern University and a member of the Georgetown Community |
|
|
Clinic Foundation board; among her many accolades was her receipt |
|
|
of the Woman of Distinction Award from the Girl Scouts of Central |
|
|
Texas in honor of her outstanding record of service; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, While Ms. Garey was committed to her community, her |
|
|
greatest joy in life was spending time with her family; she |
|
|
treasured her two daughters and four grandchildren and cheered them |
|
|
on at all their extracurricular activities; she also shared with |
|
|
her grandchildren her passion for travel by treating each to |
|
|
one-on-one trips; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Although Cammy Garey will be deeply missed, memories |
|
|
of her compassion, her remarkable generosity, and her vibrant |
|
|
spirit will remain an enduring source of inspiration for all who |
|
|
were blessed to share in the richness of her life; now, therefore, |
|
|
be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Camille Ann Garey |
|
|
and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her |
|
|
husband, Jack Garey; to her daughters, Jill Porter Conant and her |
|
|
husband, Jon, and Laura Porter Hall and her husband, Thomas; to her |
|
|
stepson, Glen Garey; to her grandchildren, Christopher, Ryan, and |
|
|
Will Conant and Catriana Hall; to her siblings, Shirley Blackmore |
|
|
Smith, Peggy Blackmore Tombs, and James Blackmore; and to her other |
|
|
relatives and many friends; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
|
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Camille Ann |
|
|
Garey. |
