| WHEREAS, Members of the Houston Lawyers Association are | ||
| gathering at the State Capitol in Austin on March 19, 2025; and | ||
| WHEREAS, An affiliate chapter of the National Bar | ||
| Association, the Houston Lawyers Association was established in | ||
| 1955 to address the needs of Black lawyers and the Black community | ||
| in general after one of the association's founders, | ||
| Robert W. Hainsworth, challenged the Houston Bar Association's | ||
| policy to refuse admission for African Americans; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Today, HLA promotes education and equal justice | ||
| under the law through advocacy, mentoring, and coalition building; | ||
| to that end, the organization provides its members with a forum to | ||
| discuss the various issues that affect their communities, and it | ||
| also conducts continuing legal training seminars, evaluates | ||
| judicial candidates, distributes relevant information to foster | ||
| professional growth and development, and offers opportunities for | ||
| networking; and | ||
| WHEREAS, For seven decades, HLA has served as a stalwart | ||
| voice for the Black community while helping to combat injustice, | ||
| and this occasion provides a fitting opportunity to honor the | ||
| association and its members; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby recognize March 19, 2025, as Houston Lawyers | ||
| Association Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to | ||
| the visiting delegation; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for the Houston Lawyers Association as an expression of | ||
| high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. | ||
