| WHEREAS, Dr. Henry Ward Bendel, Jr., of Arlington, an admired | ||
| physician and friend to many, passed away on March 28, 2010, at the | ||
| age of 86; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Henry Bendel was born on March 18, 1924, and raised | ||
| in Greenville, and he attended Texas A&M University--Commerce; as | ||
| World War II began, he joined the United States Army, earning a | ||
| Marksmanship Badge during basic training, and although he was not | ||
| called to active duty, he remained in the U.S. Army Reserves while | ||
| he completed his studies; after graduating from the University of | ||
| Tennessee School of Medicine, he returned to the Lone Star State to | ||
| complete his residency at Harris Hospital in Fort Worth, and soon he | ||
| met his future wife, Velma Ray Boone; the couple were joined in | ||
| matrimony in 1949, and they nurtured a rewarding relationship that | ||
| spanned more than five decades, until her passing; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Dr. Bendel established a general medical practice in | ||
| Honey Grove, but his work was interrupted when he volunteered for | ||
| military service a second time; on joining the U.S. Air Force during | ||
| the Korean War, he was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in | ||
| Alaska, where he served as a flight surgeon, and he later retired as | ||
| a captain; and | ||
| WHEREAS, By the mid-1950s, Dr. Bendel was training in | ||
| orthopedic surgery at a VA hospital in McKinney, and he went on to | ||
| complete an orthopedic residency at Scottish Rite Hospital in | ||
| Dallas; urged by the city's mayor, Dr. Bendel moved his family to | ||
| Arlington and launched a private medical practice in 1958; after he | ||
| completed his first year in practice, he teamed up with a group of | ||
| other new doctors in the area, and they formed the Survivor's Club | ||
| to keep in touch through the years as their careers advanced; Dr. | ||
| Bendel further contributed his expertise to the football teams of | ||
| The University of Texas at Arlington, Arlington High School, and | ||
| Sam Houston High School, and he later established the Arlington | ||
| Orthopedic Group; and | ||
| WHEREAS, In his leisure time, Dr. Bendel enjoyed hunting, and | ||
| he was active in the Arlington Sportsman Club and the National Rifle | ||
| Association; in addition, he was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of | ||
| the Arlington Masonic Lodge, and he served on the vestry of St. | ||
| Alban's Episcopal Church; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Although his death has brought great sorrow to his | ||
| loved ones, Henry Bendel leaves behind many fond memories that they | ||
| will forever treasure; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Henry Ward Bendel, | ||
| Jr., and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to | ||
| his children, Paul Bendel and his wife, Rebecca, Martha Pritchard | ||
| and her husband, David, and Ward Bendel; to his grandchildren, | ||
| David Bendel and Megan and Molly Pritchard; and to his other | ||
| relatives and friends; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for his family, and that when the Texas House of | ||
| Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Henry | ||
| Ward Bendel, Jr. | ||
