| WHEREAS, Proud citizens of Delta County are assembling at the | ||
| Texas State Capitol on February 13, 2013, to celebrate Delta County | ||
| Day; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Situated between the north and south forks of the | ||
| Sulphur River, Delta County was first inhabited by the Caddo | ||
| Indians; the area's first Anglo-American settler, Hugh Castle, | ||
| settled in the region in the 1820s and was soon joined by emigrants | ||
| from Kentucky and Tennessee; as the area began to prosper | ||
| agriculturally, residents petitioned the Texas State Legislature | ||
| to form a new county; and | ||
| WHEREAS, On July 29, 1870, lawmakers granted the request and | ||
| the region was officially organized as Delta County, named for its | ||
| triangular shape; Governor Edmund J. Davis named a five-man board | ||
| of commissioners to organize the county into precincts; the | ||
| commissioners also determined the location of the county seat, | ||
| which they named Cooper for Texas State Senator L. W. Cooper, who | ||
| played an important role in passing the legislation that created | ||
| the county; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Cooper soon became the center of local activities, | ||
| with towns like Charleston, Pecan Gap, and Ben Franklin also | ||
| growing as a result of the area's fertile soil and natural | ||
| pasturage, and the agricultural industry continues to dominate the | ||
| local economy today; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Visitors and the county's more than 5,000 residents | ||
| have numerous opportunities to explore the region's rural beauty | ||
| and history; the Patterson Memorial Delta County Museum in the old | ||
| Texas-Midland Railroad depot in Cooper offers artifacts and | ||
| memorabilia from the county's early days, while Cooper's | ||
| picturesque downtown features Miller's Pharmacy, with its | ||
| old-fashioned soda counter and vintage Wurlitzer jukebox; in | ||
| October, the county offers its annual Chiggerfest, and throughout | ||
| the year, outdoor enthusiasts can visit Cooper Lake and its | ||
| equestrian trails, swimming beaches, and fishing piers; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The citizens of Delta County are understandably | ||
| proud of their rural lifestyle, their neighborly values, and their | ||
| fertile land, which has sustained their agricultural heritage, and | ||
| it is indeed a pleasure to celebrate this unique region of the Lone | ||
| Star State; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby recognize February 13, 2013, as Delta County Day | ||
| at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere | ||
| best wishes for a memorable and meaningful stay in Austin. | ||
