| WHEREAS, The family and friends of Laura Hunt Jones suffered | ||
| a great loss with the passing of this beloved woman on November 27, | ||
| 2010, at the age of 78; and | ||
| WHEREAS, "Honey" Hunt, the daughter of Eula and Leroy Hunt, | ||
| was born in Gonzales on February 28, 1932, and was educated in | ||
| public schools in San Antonio; a natural caregiver who loved to | ||
| minister to the elderly, she was a nurse for more than 35 years, and | ||
| she was also employed by Irving Middle School as a social worker; | ||
| and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Jones was recognized as a gifted vocalist at an | ||
| early age; she was often called on to sing solos at her church, and | ||
| she became a well-known performer in San Antonio and throughout the | ||
| state; though she turned down an opportunity to record | ||
| professionally because she wished to devote herself to her | ||
| children, she used her voice throughout her life to bring comfort | ||
| and enjoyment to others, including the patients she cared for, who | ||
| had the pleasure of hearing her sing on the job; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A woman of strong faith, Mrs. Jones considered | ||
| Palestine Baptist Church her second home for more than seven | ||
| decades; she served as president of its senior choir, lead youth | ||
| sponsor, president of the pastors aide committee, vice president of | ||
| the minister's and deacons' wives committee, and chair of the | ||
| women's day and pastor's anniversary celebrations; moreover, she | ||
| took part in various church missions, served in the youth and music | ||
| departments, and was a worship leader and a district association | ||
| alternate; her passionate loyalty to her congregation inspired new | ||
| members to join and helped convince those who had become inactive to | ||
| return to the fold; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Jones also was a member and soloist with the | ||
| Citywide Revival Choir since its inception and was a coordinator | ||
| for the ensemble for more than 30 years; she was active in her | ||
| community in other ways as well, pioneering the local Neighborhood | ||
| Watch program and volunteering at the School of Excellence in | ||
| Education, a local charter school; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The generosity of spirit and enduring concern for | ||
| others that Honey Jones demonstrated throughout her life were of | ||
| tremendous value to all who had the good fortune to know her, and | ||
| her actions had a lasting and positive influence that will continue | ||
| to resonate long into the future; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Laura "Honey" Hunt | ||
| Jones and extend deepest condolences to the members of her family: | ||
| to her daughters, Charlotte Frierson and Wanda R. Knox; to her | ||
| adopted daughters, Judge Elaine Marshall, Dannie Tomes, and Lorie | ||
| Ricks; to her siblings, Johnny Knox and Mamie D. McGowan; to her | ||
| son-in-law, Hayward Collier; to her grandchildren, Vonda L. | ||
| Collier, Shonte' L. Gonzales and her husband, Luis, Ramont J. | ||
| Bowie, Storm R. Knox, DeAngelo Jones, Laura M. Jones, and JaNise | ||
| Jackson; to her two great-grandchildren; to her many nieces and | ||
| nephews; and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of | ||
| Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Laura Hunt | ||
| Jones. | ||
