| WHEREAS, Citizens of El Paso are mourning the loss of John | ||
| Morris Garmon, who died on January 26, 2013, at the age of 72; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A native Texan, John Garmon was born on July 20, | ||
| 1940, to Jake and Ella Garmon; he graduated from Austin High School | ||
| in El Paso and later attended Texas Western College; friendly and | ||
| exuberant, he enjoyed a lifelong love of music, fronting a band | ||
| called Johnny Garmon and the Shadows as a teenager and continuing to | ||
| crank out rockabilly in his later years; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Garmon began his broadcasting career at radio | ||
| station KELP in 1962, the start of a professional journey that | ||
| spanned four decades and branched out into television; over the | ||
| years, he worked for the local affiliates of all three major TV | ||
| networks and served as a news anchor for more than a decade; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Known for his encyclopedic knowledge of the city, | ||
| Mr. Garmon was a respected reporter and a generous mentor to younger | ||
| journalists; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Possessed of a booming voice, he shared his time | ||
| with the community by serving as an announcer for Hanks High School | ||
| and University of Texas--El Paso football games, as well as for UTEP | ||
| Miner basketball during the tenure of Don "The Bear" Haskins; and | ||
| WHEREAS, This veteran, old-school journalist will long be | ||
| remembered for his outgoing, affable personality, his keen | ||
| understanding of his community, and the professional skills and | ||
| dedication that ensured his enduring popularity with El Paso | ||
| viewers; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of John Morris Garmon and | ||
| extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his | ||
| children, John, Stephen, and Michael Garmon and Jackie and Chris | ||
| Taylor; to his sister, Gale Hill; to his brother, the Reverend Tom | ||
| Garmon; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it | ||
| further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of | ||
| Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John | ||
| Garmon. | ||
