H.R. No. 319

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Marcelo Cavazos of the Arlington Independent
School District was named the 2016 Superintendent of the Year for
Education Service Center Region 11; and
WHEREAS, Marcelo Cavazos began his career in education in
1990 as an English teacher in the Mission Consolidated Independent
School District; after two years, he moved to McAllen ISD, where he
taught English and government, and he went on to become the
secondary language arts supervisor for Mercedes ISD in 1993 and
associate advisor for San Benito Consolidated ISD in 1995; he also
spent a year with the Texas Education Agency Department of School
Finance and Support and lectured at The University of Texas at
Arlington; and
WHEREAS, In 1999, Dr. Cavazos joined Arlington ISD as
associate superintendent for instruction; over the following
years, he served the district as interim deputy superintendent,
deputy superintendent, and interim superintendent before assuming
his current office in 2012; and
WHEREAS, Engaged in civic affairs as well, Dr. Cavazos sits
on the boards of a number of notable organizations, including
SafeHaven of Tarrant County, the Texas School Alliance, and the
Arlington Chamber of Commerce; he further contributes to his
community through his affiliation with the Knights of Columbus, the
Rotary Club, and the Lions Club, and he is a member of St. Matthew
Catholic Church; he has received such prestigious accolades as the
Arlington Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "Sharing the Dream" Award and
the YMCA Citizen of the Year Award; and
WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Dr. Cavazos enjoys the support
of his wife, Nora, and his children, Theresa and Diego; he holds
bachelor's and master's degrees from The University of Texas--Pan
American and a doctorate from UT Austin; and
WHEREAS, The students of Arlington have gained immeasurably
from this esteemed educator's broad experience and incisive
leadership, and he is indeed deserving of this most recent honor;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Marcelo Cavazos on his
selection as 2016 Region 11 Superintendent of the Year and extend to
him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Cavazos as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
