| WHEREAS, The city of China Grove lost one of its most beloved | ||
| residents with the death of Herb Carroll on February 6, 2011, at the | ||
| age of 84; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A native of Bexar County, Marion "Herb" Carroll was | ||
| born on November 6, 1926, to Marie and Marion H. Carroll; he had a | ||
| notable 27-year career with Southwestern Bell, where he met his | ||
| wife, Pat, and the couple shared 32 years of marriage and were | ||
| blessed with six children, Kathy, Beth, Bradley, Wesley, Toby, and | ||
| Kellye; and | ||
| WHEREAS, After his retirement, Mr. Carroll founded Herb's Hat | ||
| Shop, and he became known as "Mr. Hat Man" during the following | ||
| three decades; in addition to outfitting a host of loyal customers, | ||
| including President George W. Bush, he used his vocation to benefit | ||
| a number of worthy endeavors in which he participated; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Carroll was an active and valued member of his | ||
| community; charter president of the China Grove Area Lions Club, he | ||
| helped to establish the group in the early 1980s and went on to hold | ||
| every leadership position within the local organization; he further | ||
| served the Lions Club as zone and region chair and in a number of | ||
| district cabinet offices, and he was a dedicated supporter of the | ||
| Texas Lions Camp, which provides a memorable week-long camping | ||
| experience free of charge to children with special needs; through | ||
| the years, he provided hats to Lions in countries across the world, | ||
| and he was especially proud to present a custom hat to Jimmy Ross, | ||
| the 89th president of Lions Clubs International; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Dedicated to making his town an even better place to | ||
| live, Mr. Carroll served on the China Grove City Council for more | ||
| than a decade, during which time the police department was expanded | ||
| and a new municipal court was created; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Mr. Carroll was also a life member of the San Antonio | ||
| Livestock Association, sharing his time with the calf scramble and | ||
| exhibit committees, and a lifetime honorary chair of the Cowboy | ||
| Breakfast, which he organized and helped to fund; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Caring and generous, Mr. Carroll found pleasure and | ||
| inspiration in helping others; he was a member of St. Paul Lutheran | ||
| Church, where he enjoyed the fellowship of many congregants; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Though it is impossible to gauge the full effect of a | ||
| man's life, some individuals leave their unmistakable mark on the | ||
| world as they move through it, and Herb Carroll's contributions to | ||
| his community will long resonate in the lives of all who knew him; | ||
| now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Herb Carroll and | ||
| extend deepest sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, | ||
| Pat; to his children, Kathy Hecox and her husband, Glen, Beth Zwicke | ||
| and her husband, Dennis, Bradley Carroll and his wife, Annette, | ||
| Wesley Carroll, Toby Fest and Mike Riordan, and Kellye Harris and | ||
| her husband, Randy; to his grandchildren, Ryan Hecox, his wife, | ||
| Leslie, and their son, Kyle, Ross Hecox and his wife, Amye, Ragan | ||
| Hecox, Brent Reininger and his wife, Dana, Justin Reininger and his | ||
| wife, Nicole, Hilary Reininger, Tyler Reininger, Zack Carroll, Zane | ||
| Carroll, Tori Carroll, Weston Carroll, Gary Fowler, Nicole Anderson | ||
| and her husband, Taylor, and Jordan Grenadier; to his | ||
| great-grandchildren, Brooke and Reide Reininger and Kylie and | ||
| Kelsie Reininger; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, | ||
| be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of | ||
| Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Herb | ||
| Carroll. | ||
