WHEREAS, Charlie Mae Smith was inducted into the African | ||
American Educators Hall of Fame on April 18, 2015; and | ||
WHEREAS, The hall of fame is part of the African American | ||
Education Archives and History Program, which since its founding in | ||
2002 has focused on the vital role that education plays in the | ||
African American experience in Dallas County; the organization | ||
preserves important artifacts, documents, visual images, and oral | ||
accounts, and its African American Educators Hall of Fame raises | ||
public awareness of the significant contributions made by teachers, | ||
administrators, librarians, and others; and | ||
WHEREAS, Through her love of reading and libraries and her | ||
civic service, Ms. Smith has contributed greatly to her community; | ||
a Rosenberg native, she earned a bachelor's degree from Prairie | ||
View A&M University and a master's degree in library science from | ||
Texas Woman's University; she became the first African American | ||
member and president of the Duncanville Public Library Board, and | ||
she also served on the city's Board of Adjustment; and | ||
WHEREAS, Ms. Smith is currently a member of the board of The | ||
Black Academy of Arts and Letters, and she is a life member of Delta | ||
Sigma Theta Sorority; she has been recognized by KKDA Radio and the | ||
Jack Lowe Education Recognition Program; she was also named an | ||
Oliver Wendell Holmes Classical Academy Living Legend, and the Paul | ||
L. Dunbar Learning Center in Dallas named its library media center | ||
in her honor; and | ||
WHEREAS, Through her outstanding accomplishments, Charlie | ||
Mae Smith has made a positive difference in the lives of countless | ||
Texans, and she may take justifiable pride in this prestigious | ||
accolade; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby congratulate Charlie Mae Smith on her induction | ||
into the African American Educators Hall of Fame and extend to her | ||
sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Ms. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
House of Representatives. | ||
