| WHEREAS, The Watermelon Run for the Fallen 5K Walk/Run/Roll | ||
| is being held in Hempstead on August 17, 2013, in memory of those | ||
| Texans who gave their lives in Operation Iraqi Freedom and | ||
| Operation Enduring Freedom; and | ||
| WHEREAS, This annual event was inspired by the national Run | ||
| for the Fallen first held in 2008, when a team of runners ran from | ||
| Fort Irwin, California, to Arlington, Virginia, one mile for every | ||
| member of the U.S. armed forces who was killed in Iraq; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Hosted by the family and friends of U.S. Army Staff | ||
| Sergeant Jeffery Hartley, who died in Iraq in 2008, the 5K event in | ||
| Hempstead invites runners, walkers, and people in wheelchairs to | ||
| participate in the name of fallen heroes from the Lone Star State; | ||
| the event will also feature a military flyover, live music, and the | ||
| display of the Texas Fallen Heroes Memorial Wall; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Texans owe a profound debt of gratitude to the men | ||
| and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom, | ||
| and the Watermelon Run for the Fallen represents a fine opportunity | ||
| for people of all ages to pay tribute to those brave warriors; now, | ||
| therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby commemorate the Watermelon Run for the Fallen in | ||
| Hempstead and extend to the run's organizers and participants | ||
| sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable event. | ||
