WHEREAS, Each year, people around the world set aside a | ||
special time to honor the institution of motherhood, and on May 12, | ||
2013, Texans are joining with their fellow Americans in celebration | ||
of Mother's Day; and | ||
WHEREAS, The origins of the Mother's Day observance in the | ||
United States can be traced to 1907, when West Virginia resident | ||
Anna Jarvis held a ceremony in honor of her deceased mother and then | ||
began campaigning for a national holiday to recognize motherhood; | ||
she achieved her goal in 1914, when President Woodrow Wilson | ||
proclaimed the establishment of Mother's Day and fixed its date as | ||
the second Sunday in May; and | ||
WHEREAS, The holiday unites people from all walks of life in | ||
their shared admiration and respect for their mothers, and it | ||
offers a welcome opportunity to express gratitude for the countless | ||
ways mothers encourage, teach, and inspire their loved ones; and | ||
WHEREAS, A mother's love is among life's most precious | ||
blessings, and the individuals who offer this priceless gift hold a | ||
treasured place in the world and in the hearts of the children who | ||
cherish them; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas | ||
Legislature hereby commemorate Mother's Day 2013 and extend to all | ||
mothers sincere best wishes for an enjoyable holiday. | ||
