WHEREAS, Americans everywhere are pausing on Veterans Day, | ||
November 11, 2020, to pay grateful tribute to those brave men and | ||
women who have served in the United States armed forces; and | ||
WHEREAS, Originally designated as Armistice Day, in | ||
commemoration of the end of World War I, Veterans Day now honors all | ||
who have performed military service in this country's behalf, | ||
whether as a member of the U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, | ||
or Coast Guard; and | ||
WHEREAS, From the Revolutionary War to the present, more than | ||
40 million men and women have filled the ranks of our uniformed | ||
branches; of those legions, over half a million have died in battle, | ||
more than 1.5 million have been wounded, thousands have suffered | ||
the rigors of imprisonment in POW camps, and thousands more remain | ||
missing in action; and | ||
WHEREAS, Throughout its history, our nation has been | ||
sustained by those whose love of country is such that they are | ||
willing to take up arms in its defense; every day of the year, | ||
America's servicemen and servicewomen are at their posts, at home | ||
and throughout the world, charged with maintaining the nation's | ||
security and prepared to do their utmost in defense of their | ||
homeland and the cause of freedom; and | ||
WHEREAS, Whether in time of war or peace, members of the U.S. | ||
armed forces work tirelessly as they keep faith with their oath to | ||
"support and defend the Constitution of the United States," and | ||
even though we set aside this special day in recognition of those | ||
who have served, it is incumbent on our citizenry to hold always in | ||
their hearts the men and women in uniform, past and present, and to | ||
honor their steadfast courage, their unfailing selflessness, and | ||
their willing sacrifice; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby commemorate Veterans Day 2020 and extend | ||
heartfelt gratitude to all of our veterans for their valor and | ||
patriotism. | ||
