| WHEREAS, Joe Herring, Jr., of Kerrville, a writer, historian, | ||
| businessman, and civic leader, has dedicated himself to researching | ||
| and preserving the stories of his community and the Texas Hill | ||
| Country, and he has made a splendid contribution to local history | ||
| with the publication of his recent book Home: Photographs of | ||
| Kerrville; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A Kerrville native, Mr. Herring has long collected | ||
| historic Kerr County photographs and memorabilia, and since 1994 he | ||
| has written about his hometown's colorful past in "Around Town," a | ||
| weekly column published by the Kerrville Daily Times; he also | ||
| maintains a blog called Hill Country History, which supplements his | ||
| column with additional stories and pictures; in December 2010, Mr. | ||
| Herring published Home: Photographs of Kerrville, a coffee-table | ||
| book that includes more than 200 rare photographs from his | ||
| collection and that features Kerrville people and places from the | ||
| 1890s to the 1970s; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Held in high regard by his fellow citizens, Joe | ||
| Herring is a successful businessman and a model of civic | ||
| engagement; he serves as general manager of Herring Printing | ||
| Company, which his family has operated in Kerrville since 1965, and | ||
| over the years he has sat on numerous boards and commissions; as | ||
| mayor of Kerrville from 1992 to 1994, he was instrumental in | ||
| securing that town's designation as a Texas Main Street City, as | ||
| well as in fostering the redevelopment of the downtown district and | ||
| implementing a curbside recycling program; Mr. Herring chaired the | ||
| Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce from 2009 to 2010, and in 2010 he | ||
| was honored as the Bill Dozier Citizen of the Year by the Kerrville | ||
| Daily Times; his devotion to his community and his myriad efforts in | ||
| its behalf have truly earned him the title "Mr. Kerrville"; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Joe Herring has worked tirelessly to document the | ||
| rich history and culture of Kerrville and Kerr County, and through | ||
| his determined endeavors, he has done much to preserve this | ||
| priceless heritage for future generations; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby honor Joe Herring, Jr., for his contributions to | ||
| Kerrville and Kerr County and congratulate him on the publication | ||
| of his book Home: Photographs of Kerrville; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for Mr. Herring as an expression of high regard by the | ||
| Texas House of Representatives. | ||
