| WHEREAS, Shirley Ison-Newsome is retiring in August 2013 as | ||
| assistant superintendent of Division No. 4 of the Dallas | ||
| Independent School District, concluding a distinguished career in | ||
| education that has spanned nearly four decades; and | ||
| WHEREAS, A native of Louisville, Kentucky, Ms. Ison-Newsome | ||
| graduated from Indiana University before earning master's degrees | ||
| from both the University of Louisville and The Ohio State | ||
| University; she moved to Dallas in 1974 and embarked on a rewarding | ||
| tenure with the Dallas Independent School District, where she | ||
| served as a teacher and principal with several schools, became the | ||
| district's chief of staff, and was promoted to the post of area | ||
| superintendent; and | ||
| WHEREAS, This respected educator has garnered numerous | ||
| accolades for contributions to her profession and her community; | ||
| among her many honors are the Woman of the Year designation from the | ||
| South Dallas Business and Professional Women's Club, the | ||
| Outstanding Educators Award from The Education Archives and History | ||
| Project, and the President's Award from the Urban League of Greater | ||
| Dallas and North Central Texas; a life member of the National | ||
| Alliance of Black School Educators, she was recognized in 2009 with | ||
| that group's Phenomenal Woman Award; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Throughout the last four decades Shirley | ||
| Ison-Newsome has been making meaningful contributions to the | ||
| education of thousands of students in the Dallas area, and her | ||
| achievements will have a positive effect in her community for many | ||
| years to come; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby congratulate Shirley Ison-Newsome on her | ||
| retirement from the Dallas Independent School District and extend | ||
| to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for Ms. Ison-Newsome as an expression of high regard by | ||
| the Texas House of Representatives. | ||
