R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Dr. Huda Zoghbi was presented with a Breakthrough
  Prize in Life Sciences at a ceremony in Mountain View, California,
  on December 4, 2016; and
         WHEREAS, This prestigious award honors top scientists from
  around the world who have made transformative advances toward
  understanding living systems and extending human life; each prize
  is accompanied by a check for $3 million; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Zoghbi is a professor of molecular and human
  genetics, pediatrics, neurology, and neuroscience at Baylor
  College of Medicine; she was awarded the Breakthrough Prize for her
  research into the genetic mutations responsible for Rett syndrome,
  a rare and serious neurological disorder, and she is now leading
  studies into other neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's and
  Parkinson's disease; a Howard Hughes Medical Institute
  investigator, Dr. Zoghbi holds the Ralph D. Feigin, M.D., Endowed
  Chair at Baylor and also serves as director of the Jan and Dan
  Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's
  Hospital; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Beirut, Lebanon, Dr. Zoghbi attended the
  American University of Beirut; her studies at the university's
  medical school were interrupted when the Lebanese civil war broke
  out; at her parents' behest, she immigrated to Texas and went on to
  enroll at the Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee,
  where she earned her medical degree; she subsequently received a
  postdoctoral fellowship from the Baylor College of Medicine; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Huda Zoghbi's groundbreaking insight into the
  pathogenesis of a rare disease has exciting implications for the
  field of neuroscience, and her receipt of a Breakthrough Prize
  reflects the high esteem in which she is held in the international
  scientific community; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Huda Zoghbi on her receipt of a
  Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences and extend to her sincere best
  wishes for continued success with her important work; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Dr. Zoghbi as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
