WHEREAS, Former Chicago Bears standout Steve McMichael, who | ||
starred collegiately at The University of Texas at Austin, has been | ||
selected for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a | ||
member of the Class of 2024; and | ||
WHEREAS, First gaining acclaim at Freer High School, Steve | ||
McMichael lettered in six sports and excelled on the gridiron as an | ||
All-State defensive end, kicker, and tight end; over the course of | ||
his four years at UT, he filled in as a replacement kicker during | ||
the Longhorns' undefeated regular season of 1977, and he was a | ||
two-time All-Southwest Conference defensive tackle, a consensus | ||
All-American, and a team captain; he was later chosen as a member of | ||
the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame, the UT Athletics Hall | ||
of Honor, and the College Football Hall of Fame; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. McMichael was selected by the New England | ||
Patriots in the third round of the 1980 NFL Draft; after seeing | ||
action in six contests as a rookie, he signed with Chicago, and he | ||
became a vital member of the vaunted Bears' defenses of the 1980s; | ||
affectionately nicknamed "Mongo," he was an intimidating force at | ||
his tackle position and a fan favorite, helping the team claim six | ||
division titles, three trips to the NFC Championship Game, and | ||
victory in the 1986 Super Bowl; demonstrating great resilience, he | ||
competed in a franchise-record 191 consecutive games; he was a | ||
two-time Pro Bowl pick and a First-Team All-Pro selection in 1985, | ||
1986, and 1987, and his 92.5 sacks rank second in Bears history; in | ||
1995, he retired after a final season in Green Bay; and | ||
WHEREAS, Following his 15-year NFL career, Mr. McMichael | ||
joined World Championship Wrestling and fought with the elite group | ||
known as the Four Horsemen; active in the Chicago community, he has | ||
given generously of his time and talents to help raise millions of | ||
dollars for charitable organizations; and | ||
WHEREAS, With his charismatic playing style and dedication to | ||
excellence, Steve McMichael inspired generations of football fans | ||
across the Lone Star State and beyond, and he is indeed deserving of | ||
this prestigious accolade; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby congratulate Steve McMichael on his induction | ||
into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2024 | ||
and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it | ||
further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Mr. McMichael as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. |
