	H.R. No. 152



	R E S O L U T I O N
	WHEREAS, Former University of Texas quarterback Daniel
	"Colt" McCoy has embarked on a career in the National Football
	League as a member of the Cleveland Browns, and this exceptional
	athlete is poised for further glory after having proven himself one
	of the finest college players in the nation; and
	WHEREAS, Mr. McCoy is the son of Brad and Debra McCoy, and he
	spent much of his youth in the town of Tuscola, which has a
	population of just over 700 people; throughout his career, he has
	received guidance from his father, a longtime coach who oversaw the
	football team at Jim Ned High School during the years when Colt was
	first recognized as one of the top players in the Lone Star State;
	and
	WHEREAS, After enrolling at UT, he became the starting
	quarterback for the Longhorns and, between 2006 and 2009, led the
	team to 45 wins in 53 games, the most victories compiled by a
	quarterback in the history of National Collegiate Athletic
	Association Division I football; in addition, his 76.67 pass
	completion percentage in 2008 set a new NCAA single-season record,
	and he holds nearly every UT record for passing and total offense;
	and
	WHEREAS, A clutch player who excelled in crucial situations,
	Mr. McCoy won three of the four contests he played against the
	Longhorns' archrivals, the University of Oklahoma, and he made
	essential contributions during three UT bowl game triumphs; he
	capped off his collegiate career with a superb season in 2009,
	guiding his team to the Big 12 title and an appearance in the
	national championship game; and
	WHEREAS, During his tenure with the Longhorns, his
	achievements were recognized with numerous major awards; he was a
	two-time all-American and a two-time winner of the Walter Camp
	Football Foundation Player of the Year honor, and during his senior
	year he also garnered the Maxwell Award, which honors the nation's
	top player, the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, and the
	Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award; moreover, he was a finalist for the
	prestigious Heisman Trophy in both 2008 and 2009; and
	WHEREAS, This generous and civic-minded young man has also
	distinguished himself through the volunteer work he has performed
	through the years; baptized at age 16 by his grandfather, he has
	taken a prominent role in church activities and participated in two
	mission projects in Peru; he has been equally devoted to his fellow
	Texans, assisting the Meals on Wheels and Don't Mess with Texas
	campaigns and performing yard work for senior citizens in his
	hometown and in nearby Abilene; in addition, his charitable
	endeavors have included mentoring and tutoring schoolchildren and
	regularly visiting nursing home residents and patients at the Dell
	Children's Medical Center of Central Texas; and
	WHEREAS, Realizing Mr. McCoy's enormous talent, the Browns
	selected him in the 2010 draft, and he and his wife, the former
	Rachel Glandorf, settled in Cleveland shortly after their wedding
	in July of that year; though he was not expected to see much playing
	time in his first year with Cleveland, the Texan stepped into the
	starter's role in the sixth week of the season; he turned in a
	strong performance in his debut against the Pittsburgh Steelers and
	then helped the Browns to notch two upset victories against New
	Orleans and New England; sidelined for several games with an ankle
	injury, he still managed to rack up six passing touchdowns on the
	year and threw for more than 1,500 yards, demonstrating that he can
	hold his own in professional competition; and
	WHEREAS, Having completed a successful rookie campaign, this
	hardworking young man is continuing to expand his knowledge and
	abilities, and countless residents of the Lone Star State will be
	closely following his progress as he competes alongside his peers
	in the NFL; now, therefore, be it
	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
	Legislature hereby honor Daniel "Colt" McCoy for his outstanding
	achievements on the gridiron and as a volunteer and extend to him
	sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
	prepared for Mr. McCoy as an expression of high regard by the Texas
	House of Representatives.
