| WHEREAS, Members of Leander Presbyterian Church are | ||
| celebrating the 160th anniversary of their church's founding on | ||
| February 12, 2017; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Since its organization as Pleasant Hill | ||
| Presbyterian Church on February 14, 1857, this congregation has | ||
| played a vital role in its community, providing members with myriad | ||
| opportunities for spiritual growth, fellowship, and outreach; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The church was originally located in Bagdad, one | ||
| mile to the west; when the railroad bypassed that town in 1882, | ||
| residents began to move to the new town of Leander, which had been | ||
| founded on the rail line; parishioners of Pleasant Hill erected a | ||
| church building in Leander in 1884, on land that was later deeded to | ||
| church trustees by member Sarah J. Walker; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Through the years, the congregation has benefited | ||
| from the dedicated efforts of a number of outstanding clergy and | ||
| church leaders, including its first minister, the Reverend R. M. | ||
| Overstreet, and first ruling elder, Samuel D. Carothers; today, | ||
| that tradition of service is continued by the Reverend Robert | ||
| McElwaine; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Leander Presbyterian Church has long served as a | ||
| source of inspiration and guidance to those who worship there, and | ||
| its continued existence is a testament to the unwavering commitment | ||
| of its members and clergy, both past and present; now, therefore, be | ||
| it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas | ||
| Legislature hereby commemorate the 160th anniversary of the | ||
| founding of Leander Presbyterian Church and extend to all those | ||
| associated with the church sincere best wishes for the future; and, | ||
| be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
| House of Representatives. | ||
