WHEREAS, John C. Owens of Lubbock is receiving a | ||
Distinguished Alumni Award from the Texas Tech Alumni Association | ||
on November 17, 2023; and | ||
WHEREAS, Each year, the Texas Tech Alumni Association honors | ||
graduates of Texas Tech University who have made a significant | ||
impact on the lives of others through their professional | ||
achievements and community involvement; and | ||
WHEREAS, John Owens attended Texas Tech on a four-year | ||
baseball scholarship, and in his senior year, he was named an | ||
All-Southwest Conference player; he earned a bachelor's degree in | ||
physical education in 1971 and a master's degree in education in | ||
1973; for a year, he played professionally with the San Francisco | ||
Giants organization; he joined the Texas Tech Athletic Department | ||
in 1973 and rose to become associate athletic director for business | ||
development; in 1979, he embarked on a new career that would span 42 | ||
years in the banking industry; he cofounded PlainsCapital | ||
Corporation and PlainsCapital Bank and served as chair of | ||
PlainsCapital Bank West Texas Region; now retired, he is a member of | ||
the advisory boards for PlainsCapital Bank in Lubbock and Dallas; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, Dedicated to his alma mater, Mr. Owens served as | ||
chair of both the Texas Tech Foundation and the Texas Tech Red | ||
Raider Club, and he was president of the Texas Tech University | ||
Lettermen's Association; moreover, he is a member of the Texas Tech | ||
Alumni Association and the Texas Tech Executive Round Table; | ||
benefiting the wider community, he is a charter member and former | ||
vice chair of the Lubbock Power and Light Electric Utility Board, | ||
and he currently serves on the board of Carillon Senior Living; he | ||
has also served on the Texas Baptist Foundation Board, and he is a | ||
supporter of numerous charitable organizations, including the | ||
American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes, the American Heart | ||
Association, and the Lubbock Area United Way; and | ||
WHEREAS, The accomplishments of noteworthy alumni are a | ||
source of great pride to all those associated with Texas Tech, and | ||
John Owens is indeed deserving of this prestigious honor; now, | ||
therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas, | ||
4th Called Session, hereby congratulate John C. Owens on being | ||
named a Distinguished Alumni by the Texas Tech Alumni Association | ||
and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it | ||
further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Mr. Owens as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
House of Representatives and Senate. | ||
